Powerchair Football Festival

Last weekend Cambridge United Community Trust (CUCT) hosted its first ever Powerchair Football Festival at Impington Village College, in conjunction with the Wheelchair Football Association (WFA). The purpose of the weekend was twofold: to introduce coaches to the sport on Saturday and then to invite anyone with a physical disability to try the sport on Sunday. With an extremely positive response from coaches and players alike, the Trust will now look to start more regular Powerchair Football sessions, as Cambridge United’s disability provision continues to grow.

Community Trust Manager Danny Kerrigan said: “Following the appointment of Phil Mullen as the Trust’s Disability Officer last month, we have moved quickly to capitalise on his time and expertise with a number of new initiatives. As well as last weekend’s Festival, which attracted participants from as far afield as London, we have also started a regular hearing-impairment/visual-impairment session on Tuesday evenings. The ambition now is to maintain this momentum and continue to expand the disability sport opportunities, including the introduction of a regular Powerchair Football session following last weekend’s success.”

Adam McEvoy, Powerchair Football Development Officer at the WFA added: “The coaching course was a great success and it was brilliant to meet keen and enthusiastic coaches who can use their new skills to support new players from the surrounding areas. The Powerchair Football Festival was enjoyed by all who attended and we look forward to working with CUCT to establish a Powerchair team for Cambridgeshire.”
